Knockout Knitted Basket! (FREE Knitting Pattern)

Even slow knitters can knock one of these knitted DIY baskets in about 1 hour! That’s because this project uses jumbo yarn, and there are no complicated stitches.

Not only is this FREE knitting pattern a quick and easy project, it also has a very rustic look to it when it is done due to the bulkiness of the stitches that are formed with the jumbo yarn.

When finished, this basket measures approximately 10 inches across from side to side x 6 inches tall, for normal knits. If you happen to be a tighter knitter than most, the width may end up being only 8 inches instead, although that is still a great size for a basket around the house, and it will still be able to hold a huge variety of different items.

This pattern involves knitting in the round. For this one, you will also need to know how to single crochet, for the top rim of the basket. Because the basket tends to curl inward at the top edge, cotton cording is single-crocheted around the top edge of the basket after the knitting has been completed. The stiffness of the cotton cording completely eliminates the curling of the yarn.

Materials and tools needed include:

  • Red Heart Grande Yarn (oatmeal is the suggested color, although many different colors would also work great, depending on the desired decor result).
  • Natural cotton macrame cord 3mm (white is suggested, but again, depending on the color of the basket and the desired decor you are wanting, many other colors would also work wonderfully).
  • Circular 24-inch knitting needles US Size 19. You can also use 16-inch needles, although the 24-inch needles give you more needle space.

With reference to the above notation that basket sizes can greatly vary due to differences in the tightness of the stitches, and because of the nature of this project, which is not a clothing item, gauge is not truly important for this pattern. Finished basket sizes can vary as much as 3 inches. Sometimes even when the same person crochets two of these, they can end up being different sizes.

I hope you have tons of fun knitting, and using, this project, and do feel free to post a picture if you wish. Happy Knitting!
